Living the Nolan Principles in Everyday Service

Matty Jackman Headshot

The Nolan Principles are often spoken about in the context of politics, but for most people who serve their communities, they are not abstract guidelines - they are the daily habits and disciplines that shape how we work, how we act, and how we treat others.

I have never claimed to embody them perfectly, but I do try to let them guide the way I contribute to my community, whether in uniform, in public life, or at home.

Selflessness is something you learn quickly as a Community First Responder. When a call comes in, you don’t think about yourself; you think about the person who needs help. It teaches you that service is not grand gestures - it’s choosing, repeatedly, to put someone else first. That same instinct shapes my work as an Army officer, where the welfare and safety of your team always take priority over your own comfort or convenience.

Integrity matters most when no one is watching. In the Army, in politics, and in the community, people can forgive mistakes - but they cannot forgive dishonesty. I have tried to be someone whose word can be relied upon, even when it would be easier not to speak up or not to act.

Integrity rarely makes headlines, but it builds trust quietly over time.

Objectivity is something politics sometimes lacks, but public service demands. My career in project management and defence has taught me to make decisions based on facts, evidence, and what works - not on what sounds good or gains applause. It’s not glamorous, but it’s how things actually get done.

Accountability is not just for elected officials. In uniform, if something goes wrong, you own it. As a husband, you learn the same lesson - that you are responsible for the promises you make and the people you love. I try to bring that sense of accountability into every area of my life.

Openness is not always easy in public life, but it is essential. Whether dealing with a family in crisis, volunteers on a campaign, or colleagues in a project, people deserve clear communication and honest explanations.

I’ve learned that being open isn’t about oversharing; it’s about respecting others enough to tell them the truth.

Honesty is the simplest principle and sometimes the hardest. It means admitting when you don’t know, when you’ve made an error, or when something could have been done better. The Army teaches it, marriage reinforces it, and community work demands it.

And finally, Leadership. Not the loud kind, but the steady kind - the leadership that puts others first, that listens before speaking, that keeps going when things get difficult.

I don’t claim to be a perfect embodiment of the Nolan Principles - far from it. But they are what I aspire to. They are what I return to when I ask myself whether I am serving well, whether I am contributing positively, and whether I deserve the trust people place in me.

Public life is not about titles; it’s about responsibility.

And for me, the Nolan Principles are simply a reminder that service - whether on a doorstep, on a hillside in Cumbria responding to an emergency, watching a council meeting, or at home - always begins with humility, integrity, and a commitment to others.

Kendal Deserves Better - And It’s Time to Change Direction

Tuesday, 25 November, 2025
Kendal is a town full of talent, history and potential - but let’s be honest with ourselves: we have been drifting for far too long. For nearly twenty years, the Liberal Democrats have presided over Kendal, and in that time they have allowed the town to slide steadily into demographic decline,
