The West Has Lost Its Nerve - and Conservatives Must Lead Its Renewal

Matty Jackman Headshot III

Something fundamental has gone wrong in Western politics. Voters have lost faith, not just in politicians but in the system itself.

For two centuries, representative democracy has served us well. But the world has changed faster than our politics can adapt.

We’re still running a 19th-century model of government in a 21st-century world, and it’s starting to crack. Participation has drained away, replaced by professional politics and centralised party machines.

The result is a generation of leaders who talk about diversity while practising conformity. A real variety of experience, ideas and background has been bred out.

Across the West, both left and right have dug in, defending old privileges while the world outside transforms beyond recognition.

And it isn’t just politics that’s shifting under our feet. The international order that kept us safe for seventy years is breaking apart. Europe has relied on the United States for defence for too long; Russia already sees itself at war with the West, while China is building the economic and technological foundations of global dominance.

Deterrence, like democracy, runs on trust, and that trust has evaporated. The institutions that once gave the West confidence are gone, replaced by a more dangerous, unstable world.

If we are to survive this moment, we need two revolutions: one in how we defend ourselves, and another in how we govern. The first means rebuilding our defence capacity and resilience. The second must be political - and this is where Conservatives must find their voice again.

Conservatism, at its best, has always been about renewal through realism. It is not nostalgia but the confidence to reform the present. From Disraeli’s social reforms to Thatcher’s economic revival, Conservatism has always stepped forward when the nation needed to change course. Today, that same instinct is needed again.

We need a party that believes in strong defence, personal responsibility and the value of national community.

We need Conservatives who understand that freedom depends on order. The left will offer bureaucracy and managed decline. Only Conservatives can offer direction.

Modern Conservatism must rediscover boldness, confidence and the courage to act.

The challenge now is not just to conserve, but to rebuild. We need universities that question orthodoxy, businesses that think strategically, and political parties that welcome real talent from every background.

We’ve done it before, in the Scottish Enlightenment, the industrial age and the post-war recovery. We can do it again.

Our democracy can still be saved - but not by drift or denial. It will be saved by conviction, clarity and courage. And if the Conservative Party can once again stand for those things, it can be the force that leads Britain, and the West, back to strength.

Kendal Deserves Better - And It’s Time to Change Direction

Tuesday, 25 November, 2025
Kendal is a town full of talent, history and potential - but let’s be honest with ourselves: we have been drifting for far too long. For nearly twenty years, the Liberal Democrats have presided over Kendal, and in that time they have allowed the town to slide steadily into demographic decline,
